چکیده

This study investigates the use of directional selection as a technique for implementing a new type of soft keyboard for small mobile devices. This technique is used to implement two different keyboards, with one based on arrows and one on colors. These are then compared against each other using the results from a longitudinal user test to determine if directional selection is feasible as well as which of the two designs that are best. Our results show that directional selection is a feasible technique for use with soft keyboards. Author

Discrete and Continuous Shape Writing for Text Entry and Control

Mobile devices gain increasing computational power and storage capabilities, and there are already mobile phones that can show movies, act as digital music players and offer full-scale web browsing. The bottleneck for information flow is however limited by the inefficient communication channel between the user and the small device. The small mobile phone form factor has proven to be surprisingl...

Text Input to Handheld Devices for People with Physical Disabilities

There has been little study of how to adapt handheld devices for use by people with physical disabilities. We found that the tiny stylus keyboards on PalmOS devices work well for some people with Muscular Dystrophy, who tend to have good accuracy but little strength or range of motion. However, for people with other disabilities, such as Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson's Disease and other neuro-muscu...

BloNo: A New Mobile Text-Entry Interface for the Visually Impaired

We present a new mobile text-entry method that relies on alphabet navigation and dismisses memorizing, offering visually impaired individuals an easy writing mechanism. Current mobile text-entry interfaces are not suitable for blind users and special braille devices are too heavy, large and cumbersome to be used in a mobile context. With the enormous growth of mobile communications and applicat...

Pickup Usability Dominates: A Brief History of Mobile Text Entry Research and Adoption

Text entry on mobile devices (e.g. phones and PDAs) has been a research challenge since devices shrank below laptop size: mobile devices are simply too small to have a traditional full-size keyboard. There has been a profusion of research into text entry techniques for smaller keyboards and touch screens: some of which have become mainstream, while others have not lived up to early expectations...
